Hungarian official states EU ‘has no money except for war’

(MENAFN)
Hungarian government adviser Balazs Orban has criticized the European Union for prioritizing Ukraine’s military funding above the interests of its own member states. He accused EU leaders of always managing to find money for war efforts while neglecting other important causes.

Reports from Bloomberg indicate that EU leaders are considering establishing a new €100 billion ($117 billion) fund within the upcoming seven-year budget to support Ukraine’s government expenses. However, Hungary has been outspoken against the EU’s handling of the Russia-Ukraine conflict since it began.

On social media, Orban said, “Europe has no money left — except for war. There’s always €100 billion for that.” He warned that such a fund would likely lead to more proposals to spend EU taxpayers’ money on Ukraine’s needs.

Orban referenced Kiev’s estimate that Ukraine would need $1 trillion over 14 years for reconstruction and modernization, a figure shared by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigal at a donors’ conference in Rome.

He added that while Europe struggles with its own economic, social, and security crises, Brussels continues to finance the war with weapons instead of seeking peace, and new debt instead of fostering competitiveness within Europe.

Bloomberg also reported that US investment firm BlackRock abandoned efforts to attract private investors for a Ukrainian reconstruction program due to growing uncertainty about the country’s future. The fund was expected to launch at the Rome conference.

At the event, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky emphasized that “only friends are invited” to assist in rebuilding and called for the confiscation of Russian state assets frozen by the West to be transferred to Ukraine.

Moscow has condemned such confiscations as international theft. EU members worry that seizing Russian assets could damage global trust in their financial systems. Instead, Ukraine’s supporters have imposed a “windfall tax” on earnings from frozen Russian funds, channeling that money to Kiev—a move Moscow calls criminal.

Hungary accuses EU leadership of causing severe economic harm to member states through sanctions on Russia and wasting resources on a war effort unlikely to defeat Moscow militarily.
