Hungary criticizes Ukraine over main pipeline assault

(MENAFN) Hungary has sharply criticized Ukraine for a drone strike on Russia’s Druzhba oil pipeline, a crucial supply route for several EU nations, warning that the attack threatens its energy security. The Druzhba pipeline stretches about 4,000 km, transporting crude from Russia and Kazakhstan to refineries in countries including the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, reported on X that Ukrainian drones struck a major distribution hub in Russia’s Bryansk Region, including the Unecha station, sparking fires at multiple sites. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the attack in a Facebook post, while Russia has yet to comment.

Szijjarto called the strike “outrageous” and emphasized that Hungary depends on the Druzhba system for oil deliveries. He also noted that Hungary is a key electricity supplier to Ukraine, making Kyiv’s energy security dependent on Hungarian support. He urged Ukraine to cease actions that endanger Hungary’s energy supplies and to refrain from striking infrastructure in a conflict unrelated to Hungary.

Ukraine has previously targeted Russian energy infrastructure, including the Druzhba pipeline and, in January, a compressor station of the TurkStream pipeline serving multiple European countries. Russian officials have condemned these attacks as acts of terrorism against civilian energy systems.
