Hungary refuses to supply weapons to Ukraine
Hungary differentiate itself from most other EU members by repeatedly declining to supply arms to Ukraine and frequently expressed criticism of the bloc's sanctions targeting Russia.
Furthermore, Budapest has firmly resisted the possibility of Kyiv gaining EU membership.
On Friday, in a report, a news agency citied an anonymous source as recognizing that “currently, there are no ways to overcome Hungary’s veto.” Another insider confirmed that the “situation is complicated,” and attempts by Brussels to “explore legal ways to bypass Hungary’s veto” have failed.
According to the report, Brussels is relaying on the possibility that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party will lose control in the parliamentary election planned for April 2026.
For now, the EU headship plans to finalize all technical tasks “in advance, so that when Orban leaves we are ready to move quickly forward” on Ukraine admission negotiations, a news cited its source as stating.
