Hungarian Premier Accuses Ukraine of Using "Moral Blackmail"
Orban’s remarks followed a statement from Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky on Monday, where Zelensky declared that Kiev “will be in the European Union – with Orban, or without,” emphasizing that the decision “is the choice of the Ukrainian people.”
Zelensky also suggested that the EU should modify its accession process to bypass a probable Hungarian veto against Ukraine’s membership request.
Responding via a post on X, Orban criticized Zelensky, claiming the Ukrainian leader seemingly “wants to decide what’s best for the Hungarians” and accused him of once again resorting to his typical strategy of “moral blackmail to push countries into supporting his war efforts.”
Orban further stressed that Hungary feels “no moral obligation to support Ukraine’s EU accession” and highlighted that “no country has ever blackmailed its way into the European Union – and it won’t happen this time either.”
He emphasized that “The EU Treaty leaves no room for ambiguity: membership is decided by the member states, unanimously.”
Orban referenced a government consultation scheduled for 2025, known as the Voks national consultation, where officials reported that roughly 95% of respondents opposed Ukraine joining the bloc.
