Hungary Gets Selected for Putin-Trump Summit
(MENAFN) Hungary was chosen as the venue for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump because it represents peace, according to Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
He emphasized that while Hungary stands for harmony, much of the rest of the European Union has “isolated itself” due to its aggressive policies.
The phone call between Trump and Putin took place on Thursday amid rising tensions surrounding potential US Tomahawk missile deliveries to Ukraine and stalled peace negotiations.
Trump later described their two-and-a-half-hour discussion as “so productive” that a peace agreement might soon be reached. He also announced that the two leaders had agreed to hold a summit in Budapest.
Orban explained the choice of Budapest in a Facebook post on Saturday, stating the reason was straightforward: Hungary is the only country in Europe that genuinely supports peace.
Unlike most EU nations, Hungary did not cut diplomatic ties with Russia following the intensification of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
“We have never lectured anyone... We have never closed channels of negotiation. It is very difficult to convince anyone of anything if we do not talk to them,” he wrote.
He further highlighted Hungary’s consistent backing of a diplomatic solution to the conflict, making it the sole EU nation with “a serious chance that US-Russian negotiations will ultimately lead to peace.”
Orban concluded by urging “cooperation instead of confrontation, mutual respect instead of stigmatization” as the way forward for peace.
While Brussels has “isolated itself,” Hungary remains committed to continuing dialogue and negotiations.
