Hungarian PM Criticizes Ukraine, Vows to Defend National Interests

(MENAFN) Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Wednesday sharply criticized Ukraine’s leadership, claiming Kyiv has threatened Budapest while pledging to continue defending Hungarian interests.

“The Ukrainian leadership crossed a line. We did not seek conflict, yet for days now Hungary has been in the crosshairs,” Orban said on the social media platform X.

He specifically accused President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha of issuing threats against Hungary, but insisted that this will not deter Budapest “from standing up for the interests of Hungarians.”

Orban added that Hungary will neither provide financial support to Ukraine nor allow a ban on Russian oil and gas imports. He also reiterated that Budapest will resist any attempt to fast-track Ukraine into the European Union within two years by bypassing EU law, warning that such a move would effectively mean “importing the war.”

Decisions on these issues, he stressed, will not be made in Kyiv or Brussels under his government—a position he said is “well understood” in Ukraine.

He further claimed that attempts to influence Hungary’s politics, including efforts to install a pro-Ukraine government in Budapest, are ongoing.

The remarks followed Hungary’s Foreign Ministry summoning the Ukrainian ambassador on Tuesday over alleged interference in Hungarian elections. “We will not tolerate any interference in Hungary’s elections, including Ukraine’s attempts to influence the outcome and to intervene in the electoral process in favour of the (main opposition) Tisza Party,” Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on X.
