Pro-Government Hungarian Media Pages Restricted by Facebook
The pages belonging to Bama.hu, Szabolcs Online, and Kisalföld.hu became unavailable on Friday. In a joint response, the outlets described the suspension as unjustified and confirmed their intention to challenge the decision through an appeal process.
All three publications are affiliated with Mediaworks Hungary, a media group frequently characterized by other domestic outlets as aligned with the administration of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz party.
The restrictions come shortly before Hungary heads to the polls in early April. In the upcoming vote, Fidesz is expected to face significant competition from the pro-European Union Tisza Party.
The Hungarian National Media Association criticized the move, arguing that the justification provided by the platform lacked clarity. It stated that alleged violations of the “community principles of Meta” could “mean anything,” expressing support for the suspended outlets.
The association further suggested that the action may amount to “punishing right-wing news portals for publishing news about the threat of war.” Hungary has consistently opposed certain European Union policies related to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, warning that deeper involvement by the bloc could heighten tensions and lead to further escalation.
